Fun Ways to Keep Your Soccer Skills Sharp Through Winter

There are few things more depressing than a soccer net covered in snow and icicles. The end of soccer season is always a sad time, but look on the bright side — while everyone else is relaxing and losing their touch, you can use this opportunity to sharpen your skills indoors.

3 Ways to Practice Soccer Indoors During the Winter

These three exercises are likely nothing new for athletes in Montgomery County who have participated in our private soccer lessons. But they will help you stay sharp, nonetheless, so take advantage of the indoor spaces you have available and give these a shot:

  • Juggling

Juggling is a crucial skill that all soccer players should master. But you shouldn’t mindlessly kick the ball around without a plan — focus on improving the softness of your touch, and practice with your weak foot as much as possible. By the time it’s warm again, you may no longer have a weak foot!

  • Soccer Tennis

Soccer tennis is exactly what it sounds like. It can be played on any rectangular court, and you can use chairs as a “net” if you don’t have a real one to divide the court. Like tennis, points are awarded to players who get the ball to bounce twice on the opponent’s side. However, like soccer, you are not allowed to touch the ball with your hands.

  • Wall Ball

Soccer “wall ball” should not be confused with other forms of the game in which players throw the ball with their hands. In the context of soccer, wall ball is an excellent way to soften your touch. The game is played by kicking the ball off the wall, gaining control of the ball with a touch, then kicking it against the wall again. You can even invite friends to play with you and create rules for competitive wall ball, if you’d like.

"I’ve been coming to Total Soccer since a young age, and am currently 13. My opinion is that it is very beneficial as a soccer player. All of the coaches are encouraging, and push you to get better. Of my time here, I’ve seen nothing but improvement in my foot skills and tactical awareness." - Cindy D
"Total Soccer has provided the foundation for my daughter to take her game to a whole new level. The trainers are able to provide 1:1 support to improve a player's skillset within a session, that would normally take a season to see results. We could not be any happier and always take advantage of their cost effective programs to keep my daughter sharp throughout the year. A++ in our book!" - Sharyn F
